Studying in Suzhou

If you are moving to Suzhou temporarily or permanently and are looking to learn Mandarin during your stay, there are a number of language learning options for you. For a more rigorous, daily program, you can go to a university’s language program, or you can use a private course provider for more flexibility in your learning.

Universities

Soochow University

Soochow University, founded in 1900, is one of the best Chinese universities in the Yangtze River Delta. The school offers a Mandarin language program each year for international students. The classes can be taken for one semester or academic year, and the courses take place every weekday in the morning. Students are placed into a language level ranging from basic to advanced based on their Mandarin experience and proficiency. In addition to Mandarin language courses, Soochow University has elective courses the international students may take. At the end of the semester, all students who pass the class examination and have had satisfactory attendance will receive a certificate of completion for the course. Tuition can be up to 15,000 RMB for one full academic year; however, Soochow University is a host institute for the Confucius Institute Scholarship. Students who meet certain criteria are eligible to apply for the scholarship which pays for the student’s tuition and campus housing fees and provides them with health insurance and a monthly living stipend.

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University

Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University is a Sino-British University in Suzhou that offers an array of degree programs. The university has a Mandarin language program running each semester for international students. Students choose to take classes in either the fall or spring semester, September to February or February to June respectively, or they can take classes for the entire academic year. Students are placed into a level from beginner to advance based on their current language skill. There are six different levels, but students can usually fit two levels into one semester. Class sizes are small, and the school provides students with a language partner to facilitate their learning. Upon completion of each level with satisfactory grades, students receive a certificate. Tuition per semester is 8,500 RMB, but the tuition covers classes and textbooks in addition to class field trips. Many field trips are local with one trip each semester to a northern province.

New Concept Mandarin offers a variety of Mandarin language courses in Suzhou. New Concept has general courses for children, teens, and adults, as well as business courses for professionals. Classes can be taken privately with a teacher, in a group of around four people, or online at your convenience. The courses are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, and the teacher adjusts the vocabulary and curriculum to meet each student’s needs. In addition to the courses themselves, New Concept Mandarin provides students with a wealth of resources such as textbooks, online learning tools, Chinese applications, and extra video lessons.

South and North Mandarin

South and North Mandarin offers language courses based on the practical needs of its students living in China. Courses are offered in nine different levels from beginner to fluent. The first three levels focus on understanding and communicating about topics that one would typically face in school, work, or other daily activities. Levels 4 through 6 focus on obtaining a solid foundation for business, and levels 7 through 9 are designed to help students attain full fluency. Each individual lesson costs up to 80 RMB, but South and North Mandarin also offers course packages to making registering more simple and affordable. Most classes are taught in a group setting, and class times can be during the day, at night, or on the weekend to accommodate all schedules. Private lessons are also offered, and, despite costing up to 200 RMB per lesson, they allow greater progress as the lessons are designed based on the student’s needs.

Accent Mandarin offers a variety of Mandarin language courses to meet the needs of anyone wanting to learn or improve in Chinese. Group courses range from beginner to advanced levels, and the classes have up to six students. Private courses can be scheduled according to each student’s convenience, and they are tailored to the student’s specific needs. If having a one-on-one session with a teacher is too intimidating, Accent Mandarin offers a two-on-one course for a couple or close friends to have private lessons together. Intensive and corporate courses are also provided for students with specific goals such as passing the HSK 4 exam or learning a professional vocabulary. In addition to courses, Accent Mandarin has extracurricular activities each week, allowing students to establish new friendships and learn more about Chinese culture. Classes offered include calligraphy, watercolor painting, tea tasting, mahjong, and Chinese cooking.
